“The Battle Of Bolton”

Bolton Digital PS vs Wigan PS vs Bolton Camera Club
A total of 16 members made their way over to Bolton Camera Club for the inaugural three-way print and PDI competition between the hosts, Wigan PS and Bolton Digital PS. Each team had to submit a total of 12 prints and 12 digital images, each section from a total of 12 different workers…..not an easy task, as most club competition secretaries will testify.

The room was fairly well filled as we settled in in anticipation of the evening’s events. The judge was Barry Colquohoun from St Annes PS, who sensibly had a couple of run-throughs with the projected images before starting to deliver his comments and scores for each shot. It was clear from the first viewing of the images competing that Barry’s job wasn’t going to be easy and he made it plain to everyone that the differences between the scores awarded to the images was going to be down to nit-picking. Once the previews had been completed, the serious business of scoring each image started. As ever, scoring is very much a matter of personal opinion….but the comments made by Barry all seemed constructive and fair. The first cheer to go round the room was for Mark Power’s “Tree Nymph”, which took a full bag of points, with the perfect 20 out of 20. Ania Pankiewicz’s “For Your Eyes Only” followed on soon afterwards with another bullseye. No less than six of BDPS’s twelve digital images took 19/20 or above!! That’s top scoring by any club’s standards. Despite this, after the projected section, Wigan PS enjoyed a narrow lead over BDPS with 223½  to 221½ , with Bolton Camera Club a short way behind with 219½. All to play for!

After the coffee break, it was on to the prints. Barry had taken the opportunity afforded by the break in proceedings to look through the entries before delivering his opinions on them. BDPS had seemingly stepped up a gear, with no less than three prints getting maximum
The inaugural “Battle of Bolton” took place on Thursday 11th August, hosted by Bolton Camera Club. The first annual three-way print and PDI competition between BDPS, Wigan PS and Bolton Camera Club turned out to be a very narrow victory for BDPS….on penalties!!

Above: “Tree Nymph” by Mark Power….one of five images that scored 20 out of 20 during the competition  Right: “For Your Eyes Only” by Ania Pankiewicz…the second 20/20 on the night.
Below: “The Young Martyr” by Chris Carter, the first print of the evening to get 20/20…. Quickly followed by “Dispute” by Geoff Davies and “In The Spotlight” by Brian Wilcox, both weighing in with maximum points.
points……”The Young Martyr” by Chris Carter, “Dispute” by Geoff Davies and “In The Spotlight” by Brian Wilcox all scored 20. It was hard to imagine we’d improve on the PDI scores, but the prints yielded no less than six images from our twelve with 19½ or higher!! In spite of this, BDPS’s margin of victory in the print section was only 2 points – BDPS 223½, Wigan PS 221½ and Bolton Camera Club 219.

Overall the score was tied between BDPS and Wigan PS, who both scored 445 pts, with Bolton Camera Club close behind on 438½. In order to establish the winning club, the count-back rule was invoked and Bolton Digital PS ran out winners 5-2 on penalties, by virtue of us having scored the perfect 20 with five images and Wigan having done so with two….and as any self-respecting German footballer will tell you, penalties will do! Needless to say, the celebration at “The Lion of Vienna” afterwards was quite lively.

So….BDPS win the first “Battle of Bolton”. Our thanks go to both the judge, Barry Colquohoun, and our hosts for providing an excellent evening’s entertainment. We look forward to hosting next year’s event and defending the proposed trophy, discussed on the night itself.
